Department purpose and structure

The HR team at Allen & Overy provides a first class service to the business, offering strategic HR business advice at the business partner level and quality support services in the full range of HR functions through specialist teams such as, learning & development, resourcing, reward, employee relations advice, diversity and inclusion, payroll, systems and HR administration.


Role purpose

The Law Student Recruitment Specialist (or Senior Coordinator) is responsible for the day-to-day implementation of year-round, student-focused efforts – including on-campus interview and call back processes, our multi-office US summer program, law school and student outreach & events, and entry-level attorney recruiting. This role will coordinate law student recruitment efforts for A&O’s New York, Washington DC as well as newer Boston, Los Angeles, and Silicon Valley offices.

Job description

Role and responsibilities


Law Student Recruitment

•           Provide input into the development & execution of tailored recruitment strategies for five distinct and expanding US Allen & Overy offices (New York, DC, Boston, Los Angeles & Silicon Valley)

•           Assist with targeted law school & student outreach efforts with creative involvement on: marketing materials, events, industry surveys, sponsorships, legal media content and A&O branding

•           Manage on-campus and callback interviewing teams, focusing on: candidate-experience, yield-management, offer processes, as well student interface & correspondence via LawCruit and FloRecruit

•           Aid in preparation, reporting and analysis of applicant, offeree and acceptance data

•           Manage (as needed) entry-level recruitment of 3L, judicial clerks and LLM students, including: ascertaining hiring needs, sourcing applicants and overseeing offers

•           Collaborate with greater US HR team on the tracking, intake and onboarding of 3L, LLMs and judicial clerks

•           Serve as firm liaison to candidates: during applicant pre-identification, at receptions & events, for non-OCI interviewing as well as to facilitate attorneys’ follow-up with pre-recruits & offerees

•           Liaise with a variety of student & affinity groups, key Career Services teams and pipeline organizations

•           Assist with such special efforts as: interviewer trainings, 1L hiring, SEO & LCLD partnerships, laterals’ involvement in hiring, collaborations with A&O clients and the development of diversity fellowship programs


Summer Associate Program

•           Spearhead creative offerings for a (25+ student) multi-office, in-person & virtual “hybrid” summer program – focused on practice area & participant interconnectedness, alongside current Recruiting Coordinator

•           Collaborate in summer program execution, including: content, communications, mentoring and delivery of assignments, guidance & offers

•           Help organize in-person Summer Orientation and on-boarding, including: liaising with HR, IT, Travel & Finance departments; tracking work authorization/visa application processing; and overseeing external vendors

•           Facilitate summer associate feedback compilation, help conduct mid-summer and end-summer reviews and track entry-level practice group rotation preferences

•           Liaise with offices overseas, also hosting US JD-track summer associate programs

•           Serve as year-round resource to law students from 1L outreach into their summer program and later throughout 3L pre-Fall arrival aftercare



•           Create and maintain (internally & externally) messaging consistent with Firm’s US growth strategies and unique global brand

•           Interweave DEI efforts into all aspects of recruitment, campus relations and summer curriculum/programs

•           Remain alert to (and report on) market trends, peer firm intelligence, the legal education landscape and advancements in the law firm/professional services hiring

•           Guide & develop junior teammates, alongside Senior US Law Student Recruitment Manager and HR leadership

•           Other recruitment and HR-adjacent projects, as needed



This individual will report directly to the NY-based Senior Manager of US Law Student Recruitment and will work closely with an LSR-focused Recruiting Coordinator, as well as other members of the US HR team.


Key requirements

•           Bachelor’s degree, ideally with an interest in the legal field

•           2-4+ years, experience of managing recruitment processes in a high-quality, high-touch, fast-paced environment, ideally at a comparably sized firm. Knowledge of US legal markets and lateral or law student recruitment industries, desirable.

•           Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to quickly establish rapport, build trust and demonstrate credibility with a range of personalities and across varied seniority levels

•           Proven organizational skills with excellent attention to detail

•           Must be willing to work extended hours and travel, including some weekends, particularly during the busy recruitment season (May-August)

•           Sound judgment, flexibility, eagerness, intellectual curiosity and ability to respect, protect, and maintain highly confidential information
